Lisa D. 42. One day, more or less out of the blue, reality slapped me in the face – I had no stories from the last eight years of my life. My life had deteriorated into a very predictable routine: work long hours at the office, come home and eat junk food that was totally devoid of nutritional value, watch TV, drink until I was numb, go to bed, and do it all over again the next day. That was it. I had cut myself off from the world because I was mortified and humiliated by my appearance. I had discovered that my body couldn’t do the things I wanted it to, like skiing and hiking. Rock climbing? Puhleez. When I tried to enjoy these activities, they weren’t fun anymore – I was in physical pain or discomfort, and would therefore spend the entire time ridiculing and haranguing myself for being a fat pathetic slob. Not really a good time, so I stopped participating altogether. For me, creating adventures and stories with loved ones is the true essence of life, and it had been missing from my life for nearly a decade. I was devastated when I realized that I had squandered so many years, and was frankly terrified that the routine I’d developed was all I had to look forward to for the next 50 years. To me, I wasn’t living, but simply existing. So I mourned the years that I had lost, and began focusing my energy on finding a ‘diet’ where someone would ‘just tell me what to do’. Thankfully, I found Genesis Transformation and decided to give it a try. Why not? I had nothing to lose. Well, that’s not entirely true – I had 125 pounds to lose.
When I started my GT journey, I was 40 years old and packing 280 pounds around on a 5 ft 11 inch frame. I had chronic severe lower back pain (two doctors had recommended surgery), high blood pressure, cholesterol in the 280 range, thinning hair, and adult acne. Not surprising that I was also hopped up on anti-depressants, huh? Unlike a lot of people whose weight gain is gradual, mine was quick and intentional – I had gained 80 lbs in six months while on a bender of self-loathing and destruction. Once I had addressed my ‘issues’, I attempted to lose the weight that I’d gained, spending seven years yoyo dieting. Each time I dieted and lost weight, I would gain back all that I’d lost, plus an additional 10-15 lbs. By the time I had found Genesis, the amount of weight I had to lose was overwhelming, to say the least. But I knew that I had to at least try, so I shifted my focus from 125 lbs, to the first 5 lbs. Then the next 5 lbs. And it worked.
Overall, I found the Genesis process to be rather simple – do what you’re told, try to think positively, and the fat will come off. That’s not to say it was always fun or easy – after all, totally transforming your body, thoughts, and life is no small feat. There were days when I really did not want to go running, or when I really wanted a beer. But I (almost!) always pushed through and stuck with my plan for the day, with my eye on the prize. One phrase from the GT website rang very true to me, and it was my mantra when I found myself struggling: If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have already got. It was the reminder I needed that my choices had gotten me into my current predicament, and it was only my current and future choices and actions that could get me out. So one choice at a time, one action at a time, one day at a time, I transformed my life.
Today, two years after beginning my journey, I’m at a healthy weight of 155 lbs, with 16 percent body fat, a resting heart rate in the low 50s, exceptional blood pressure and cholesterol levels, a clear glowing complexion, and shiny healthy hair. Back pain and prescription drugs are distant memories. Physically, my body is capable of almost any activity I ask of it. Of course, being fit doesn’t mean I’ve suddenly gained talent or skill for those activities, but I can try them without fear of judgment, and laugh at myself if I don’t excel at that particular activity or sport.
When I started GT, I fully expected that I would achieve my weight goals. Admittedly, I was entirely focused on the number on the scale back then, rather than indicators of health and fitness. What I didn’t expect was how much I would learn about my body, nutrition, clean food and fitness. Even more surprising is how dramatically Genesis has impacted my outlook on life and how much it has expanded my life experience. I hadn’t anticipated the beautiful people I would encounter and the friendships that would develop. Most profoundly, I didn’t expect to discover that if I can totally transform my body and lifestyle, I’m truly capable of anything - including creating the life I dream of!
My gratitude to my coach, the GT team, and all of the people who supported and encouraged me along this path is without bounds. I believe that the GT community was central to my success, and am therefore eager to pay it forward to anyone who embarks on this amazing life adventure!
